  17. Beta version 0.10 of NCSA Mosaic for the X Window System, a networked
  18. information systems and World Wide Web browser, is hereby released:

  26. This release of NCSA Mosaic is known to compile on the following
  27. platforms:
  28.  
  29.   SGI (IRIX 4.0.2) 
  30.   IBM (AIX 3.2)
  31.   Sun 4 (SunOS 4.1.2 with stock X11R4 and Motif 1.1).
  32.   DEC Ultrix.
  33.  
  34. More binaries will be supplied as I am able to find other
  35. Motif-configured platforms to use.  (Contributions of working
  36. binaries, or development systems, are welcome.)  Documentation is
  37. available online.
  38.  
  39. Changes since 0.9 include:
  40.  
  41.  o Support for <IMG> tag: inlined images in HTML documents.
  42.     o Handles X bitmap and GIF formats so far.
  43.     o New resource, colorsPerInlinedImage, can be used to restrict
  44.       color use of inlined images -- default is 50.
  45.     o Image files can be located anywhere on the net (pointed to by
  46.       URL); image data is cached in memory for fast display and
  47.       reuse.
  48.     o Example of inlined bitmap:

  50.     o Example of inlined image serving as anchor:

  53.  o Better support for acting as binary file retrieval client.
  54.     o Each window can either be in binary transfer mode or not;
  55.       resource binaryTransferMode controls startup value (default
  56.       is 'False', and you probably don't want to change this). A
  57.       toggle button in the Options menu allows changing on the fly.
  58.     o If a window is not in binary trasfer mode, data files with
  59.       unrecognized types will be displayed in the window as either
  60.       plain text or HTML (depending on the server type), as before.
  61.     o If a window is in binary transfer mode, data files with
  62.       unrecognized types will be dumped to a local file after being
  63.       transferred over as binary data.
  64.     o Regardless of whether a window is in binary transfer mode or
  65.       not, files with recognizes types (images, sound, etc.) will be
  66.       handled as usual, and uncompression will be transparent as
  67.       usual.
  68.     o The whole point of all this is to allow the user to select on the
  69.       fly how a given file of an unrecognized type is to be handled.
  70.     o Because files are currently typed by filename extension,
  71.       binary transfer mode should generally be kept off, otherwise
  72.       it will screw up things like WAIS searches pretty badly. Also,
  73.       since Gopher does things differently from everyone else,
  74.       things are different there too.
  75.     o Setting one of the multimedia resources to the text string
  76.       "dump" will cause files of that type to be dumped to local
  77.       disk as though in binary transfer mode.

  79.       for a more thorough discussion of these issues.
  80.  o Audio annotations for Sun's with /usr/demo/SOUND/record (or
  81.    something similar) are now enabled. Resources
  82.    recordCommandLocation and recordCommand are used to specify the
  83.    command used to record sound; theoretically, this approach can be
  84.    used on any platform with appropriate hardware and software,
  85.    although SGI Indigo & Sun Sparcstation are the only two that I know
  86.    of.
  87.  o Search capability within documents: enter search term, scrollbar
  88.    jumps to match and match is highlighted; repeat as desired.
  89.  o Enhanced support for various Gopher types, including binary files
  90.    and CSO phonebooks (sorry, phonebooks aren't supported yet, but at
  91.    least now an error message shows up).
  92.  o Spaces converted to +'s in keyword queries now.
  93.  o Scrollbar arrows now increment a reasonable amount when viewing
  94.    large documents.
  95.  o Anonymous FTP password is now always user@host.domain,
  96.    enabling access to every strange FTP server out there that I know of.
  97.  o Pattern-matching to determine file type based on file name now uses
  98.    caseless string compare.
  99.  o Better default visited anchor color for non-SGI color displays.
  100.  o Messages from libwww now show up in pop-up dialogs like they
  101.    should.
  102.  o Telnet never gets asked to use unrecognized -l flag.
  103.  o Tar files are now always retrieved to local disk (and not displayed).
  104.  o Replacement (and better) Archie interface.
  105.  o Mail Developers window is cleared on each use.
  106.  o New resource trackVisitedAnchors; can be used to turn off tracking
  107.    of visited anchors altogether.
  108.  o Better transparent uncompression support:
  109.     o Gzipped (.z) files are now recognized and uncompressed on
  110.       the fly (as well as .Z files, as before).
  111.     o New resources uncompressCommand (default 'uncompress')
  112.       and gunzipCommand (default 'gunzip').
  113.  o As usual, little bugfixes and cleanups.
  114.  
  115. We're targeting a 1.0 release for the beginning of April, so quick
  116. feedback and bug reports will be GREATLY appreciated.
